What is HB-142?

HB-142 is a House bill repealing HB-2, also known as North Carolina's "Bathroom bill". It was signed into law March 30, 2017 by Governor Roy Cooper. Read the bill yourself here.

Why is this important?

HB-2 put North Carolina in the national spotlight when it was passed on March 23, 2016. Some claim the law offers common sense protections for bathroom and shower facilities, forcing people to use the facility of the gender on the birth cirtificate. It was met by a lot of backlash from the civil rights community.

It's estimated that HB-2 costs the state hundreds of millions of dollars, with a future projected loss of $3.6 billion.

HB-142 repeals that bill, but also restricts local governments from regulating private employment practices or regulating public accommodations until 2020.
